Study Design
3-month open-label nutritional intervention study
Participants
27 hypertensive male volunteers (ages 32–68) with type 2 diabetes mellitus. All were free of kidney disease and continued their regular medications during the study.
Intervention
Daily intake of 3 grams of Pleurotus ostreatus mushroom powder (in capsule form), divided into three 1-gram doses, taken over a 3-month period.
Outcome Measures
- Blood pressure (systolic and diastolic)
- Fasting plasma glucose
- HbA1c
- Serum creatinine (kidney function)
Summary
This study evaluated the effects of daily Pleurotus ostreatus supplementation on blood pressure and glycemic control in men with both type 2 diabetes and hypertension. After three months of supplementation, both systolic and diastolic blood pressure were significantly reduced (p<0.001), alongside significant reductions in fasting glucose and HbA1c levels. No changes in serum creatinine were observed, suggesting no adverse effect on kidney function. The findings support the potential use of Pleurotus ostreatus as a functional food for improving cardiovascular and glycemic health in diabetic hypertensive individuals.
