Effects of Cordyceps militaris supplementation on the immune response and upper respiratory infection in healthy adults- a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study

Authors: The Korean Nutrition Society

Journal: Journal of Nutritional Health

Study Design: Randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial

Participants: 100 healthy adults aged 20-70 years with a history of at least two colds in the past year

Intervention:

  • Cordyceps militaris extract (300 mg/day) for 12 weeks
  • Placebo for 12 weeks

Outcome Measures:

  • Incidence and symptoms of upper respiratory tract infections (URI)
  • Changes in cytokines, IgA, and natural killer (NK) cell activity

Summary: The study investigated the effects of Cordyceps militaris supplementation on the immune response and the incidence of upper respiratory tract infections (URI) in healthy adults. The results showed that Cordyceps militaris did not significantly affect the incidence or symptoms of URI compared to the placebo. However, the Cordyceps militaris group exhibited significantly higher NK cell activity and IgA levels, suggesting potential immunomodulatory effects. The study concluded that while Cordyceps militaris may not directly prevent URI, it could enhance immune function. Further research is needed to explore the mechanisms and potential benefits of Cordyceps militaris in relation to immune health.
